It’s no secret by now: having beautiful skin isn’t just a matter of genetics, it’s also about our good daily habits. Skincare routine has a huge impact on our appearance, which is why it’s very important.

The right skincare is based on the knowledge of your skin type, which will allow you to be able to proceed every day with a routine and products tailored to you. Once you understand if your skin is dry, oily, in combination, or sensitive, you can customize your skincare routine according to your needs. If you’re creating your skincare routine for the first time, keep it simple: start with the basics, then you’ll have time later to expand it in the best way possible.

What are the fundamental steps of a perfect Skincare Routine?

Below we’ll explain the basic steps for a correct skincare routine, the ones you should never skip.

The first step of the skincare routine: cleanse

The idea is to cleanse your skin twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. Cleansing your skin in the morning is important because it allows you to remove any sweat and oil left overnight. Cleaning the skin in the evening serves to remove all the substances that accumulate on our face during the day: the skincare and make-up products used during the day, but also excess sebum and sweat, dead cells, and the pollutants present in the air.

Skincare routine: how to choose the cleanser?

If you are not sure about the characteristics of your skin, instead of a specific cleanser you can opt for a moisturizing cleanser, which is good for all skin types. Choose one that is fragrance-free, with minimal ingredients, and that contains ceramides and glycerin to restore and maintain the skin barrier.

The second step of the skincare routine: moisturize

After cleansing your skin, use a cream or moisturizer that is oil-free and fragrance-free.

This is the right time to respond to your skin’s specific needs: so if you’ve identified your skin type with certainty, you can use a moisturizer formulated with additional ingredients. For example, Hyaluronic Acid, which softens the skin and restores lost hydration; ceramides, essential for the resistance of the skin barrier and very important for combating dryness and eczema; Vitamin C, which protects against antioxidants and brightens the skin.

Warning: if you have oily or acne-prone skin don’t think you can skip this step! Using a moisturizer is also very important to you; a deep cleansing of the skin, not followed by the application of a moisturizer, will trigger excessive production of oil on the skin, and in the long run, the skin will become dry and irritated.

If you have oily skin, the ideal cream for you is a non-comedogenic moisturizer, which is one whose ingredients won’t block pores or cause breakouts.

The third step of the skincare routine: protect

Sunscreen is the single most important product you can use to protect your skin. Apply a product with at least SPF30 daily, even when it’s cloudy, as the last step of your skincare routine. You have two paths to choose from chemical protection, which protects the skin from UV rays by absorbing them; and mineral protection, which works like a shield, blocking the sun’s rays from penetrating the skin.

The exfoliation

Once you have inserted these three fundamental steps into your daily life, you can start enriching your skincare routine with other steps. An excellent starting point is an exfoliation: the ideal would be to do it once or twice a week.

There are two methods of exfoliating the skin: chemical exfoliants induce cell turnover and increase collagen formation; physical exfoliation, manually removes dead skin cells and excess oil via a scrub. If you have sensitive skin we suggest you opt for the second type of exfoliation, because chemical exfoliants could irritate you.

Serums and masks

Among the additional steps you can introduce into your skincare routine is the application of serums and masks. Serums are very light but high-potency products, their formula contains a higher concentration of active ingredients to counter specific skin problems, and they are applied before the moisturizer.

Once or twice a week you can do a mask: look for a mask formulated to address your specific problems (for example, there are moisturizing, brightening, and calming masks) and apply it to clean dry skin.

Now that you know all the steps of a correct skincare routine, you will be able to take better care of your skin. Remember to have patience and perseverance, the skin needs two or three months to get used to the product, the time necessary to be able to see a real change. Furthermore, a prolonged routine over time is the key to obtaining and maintaining real results.
